Farewell to the e-mail

Email_extinct I must admit I've been writing 'email' rather than 'e-mail' for some time now (but not always - as evidenced by a 1999 paper on 'E-mail in the workplace' - bit of a museum piece now but here's a link to the PDF if you're interested...)

But apparently the Associated Press has just issued an edict to the effect that the hyphen is to go. E-mail shall henceforth be known as email. The good peeps at the Email Experience Council have been lobbying for this for some time, and their petition makes interesting reading. Who'd have thought that the lack of a hyphen would be so loaded, "signifying the ubiquity and power of this form of communication".

According to this chart, the non-hyphenated version has been winning the battle for the last few years, so perhaps it really is farewell to the "e-mail".
