What’s your definition of Twitter spam?

I have my own ideas of what is Twitter spam – too many promotional tweets, for example, or too many repeated, automated tweets.

But then again, I always tell people 'spam is in the eye of the recipient – if they think you are spamming them, then you are, whatever you think.'

Well I seem to have got a taste of my own medicine. On Twitter, I keep any eye on tweets that include the name of my home town, so that I can see who's tweeting and what's going on.

Interesting stuff I’ve seen recently on Twitter

Several times over the last week or so I've found myself in the position of being asked, in fact almost bombarded, with questions about Twitter. At a workshop on PR (where I was a participant), at a dinner party, in the pub.

What is it? What's it for? Is it like Facebook? What's the point of it for businesses? Isn't it just people saying what they just had for breakfast?

Clearly the broadcast media has fuelled a Twitter frenzy, but it has very few answers to the questions on people's lips.

What I get out of using Twitter

I'm often asked 'what's the point of Twitter?' and in many ways the answer depends on the context.

They may mean 'what's the business rationale for using Twitter?' Or 'why does anyone use Twitter?' Or sometimes it's just 'why on earth do you spend time on that Twitter thingy?'

Twitter is like any large gathering – there are people sharing interesting news, private jokes, asking and answering questions. There are open discussions, people watching and listening, others touting their wares or showing off, others sharing stuff they doing, seeing or learning.

Getting to know others through Twitter – ‘try before you buy’

I recently got an email from a designer who had found my details on a business directory. He was asking me to bear him in mind if I ever had need of someone with his skills and background.

It happens all the time, and I've done it myself. Except that this time my first thought was to ask 'are you on Twitter?'

By following someone's Tweets, and they following yours, you quickly get an idea whether you're likely to be on the same wavelength. Personally, I want to do business with, and work with, people I can get on with.
