Councils save money by sharing marketing materials
Here's a really good idea: Portfolio Marketplace is a service that allows public sector organisations to buy, sell and share marketing campaign artwork.
It was set up by Nottingham City Council. The idea is that public sector bodies across the country are increasingly strapped for cash, and they're also all trying to promote the same services and tell the same messages. So why not pool their marketing materials? My first thought was 'GREAT – less waste of public sector money.' But of course I can imagine the opposite point of view – all those design and marketing agencies being done out of work.
Commenting on blogs
Actually this post is a sidebar to the blogging book I'm working on at the moment. I've calculated that in the last month I've written the equivalent of 60 or more blog posts. Which is one reason why Eggblogg has suffered a bit. Anyway, no excuses.
I just wanted to mention a couple of things about commenting, because commenting has come up a few times lately in different contexts. If you blog, and are trying to attract more readers and commenters on your own blog, one thing you need to be doing is commenting on other blogs.
Google Plus – what they’re saying about it
There's been a lot of talk about Google Plus in the Twitter- and Blogosphere. I haven't had much time to really explore it, let alone comment on it, but I've been making a note of useful resources to come back to. In case you're in the same position, or missed all the hoo-ha, here are a few blog posts on the subject that look useful:
Nice intro and background to Google Plus from Mashable, with a list of related articles..
Darren Rowse of Problogger suggests some reasons Why Bloggers Should Engage on Google+ …
Interesting Q & A on the subject of Google Plus, including what it offers (or might offer) small businesses…from Hartford Business Journal Online.
Are you being classified as ‘potential garbage’ on Twitter?
There are some great tools out there for cleaning your Twitter list and managing followers/followees. I recently came across ManageFlitter which allows you to look more closely at the behaviour of those you follow, sorting them into 'talkative','quiet', 'Inactive', 'no profile image' and 'not following back.'
There's a Pro version which gives you extra features for more filtering and drilling down, and makes it easy to follow those that you retweet or who have @ replied you and you don't know them, that kind of thing.
